Marina Burke (TRIGGER WARNING- anxiety, substance abuse, depression and eating disorders)

I really wanted to try and work narratively and symbolically this week. Let me know what you think. This project is about how darkness can linger and consume you in times of stress or anguish.

  1. I think you captured the powerful personification of darkness effectively, especially with the expression of the face in img 8 directly at the camera. It makes the subject of the images unaware of the presence of"darkness", but only visible to the viewer. I think the idea can be stronger if the "darkness" was looking at the camera with the powerful stare, rather than the subject of the photos.

  2. Marina, interesting attempt at conceptualizing a theme. Firstly, your. theme can be described differently, thats something we can work on together. Images 1,3,8,9 and 10 are super powerful. Image 8 being the strongest. Formally and conceptually it works! great use of contrast and the head on gaze of the subject is quite successful. I really appreciated how you expressed the narrative in images 9 and 10. Some images like image 3 had literally no focal point! no part of the image was in focus. other images like 5,6,7 could benefit from clearer formal choices like balance, rule of thirds, symmetry even. Did you use a tripod when shooting these images? the clarity is inconsistent. Otherwise you've definitely shown an ability to conceptualize an idea.
    Good job.

  3. I think you accomplished your goal of depicting darkness in ones life. I especially like how you represented the darkness/temptation with the girl dressed in all black.

  4. Your use of contrast and the inclusion of a wide range of values, especially dark values, push your idea even further. Conceptually, I find the photos in which the darkness directly interacts with the subject (rather than observing) are the most interesting.

  6. I think this is a very interesting theme and a story is starting to arise which is very successful. Your 8h photo to me is most striking as you have the victim on the floor with this entinity looking at the camera like an almost child instead of culprit or looming doom. The representation of the darkness as a person and then the passing of it is very interesting and conceptually strong.

  7. The narrative for this week's photos was solid. The personification of darkness and its interaction with a person were very interesting to look through. Your most striking image to me was number 8 where the darkness confronts the viewer after the girl has been knocked out. I almost feel like I'm going to be its next victim.

  8. I think that with some more development, this could be a really interesting narrative. The contrast of the "darkness" figure and the walls works really well in the second and forth pictures. The theme works really well, but I think that it might come across better if the dark figure's face wasn't visible to make it more ominous (either covering the face with fabric or like a ski mask backwards or something).

  9. This is a nice starting point for a larger story. If you do want to use a personification of the dark presence, I think that it would be more effective if you abstract their face moreso whether it be with a mask or makeup so that it disrupts the human form so that it reads more as a presence than a person. Another possibility would be to just direct them to be more intense with their facial posing (like when they're staring intensely at the camera). Also, the fourth image is really successful in its content and is my favorite out of all of them, but I wish it would have been more centrally cropped over your models/toilet as the shower distracts from the content.

  10. I think the story is portrayed well. I enjoy the fact that its helping in one picture almost like its a friend. idk that strikes me. and also the one with the mirror I think is a nice way to create a sense that 2 different things are happening but a story is obviously there

  11. You did a great job at personifying darkness in these photos, I think because you made the darkness into an actual person your photos gained a deeper meaning since in a way the darkness is an extension of the person themselves

  12. In many cases the subjects in your photos are well highlighted and placed with precision in the the compositions so as to form balance. This a thoughtful theme to pursue and certainly a challenge since you are trying to visualize something mental. Perhaps some of the photos are would be stronger if the subjects were easier to see?
