Here are my photos for the week. I've managed to execute 7 out of the 20 ideas that I had for my narrative so I've still got a ways to go. But I guess another way of looking at it is that I'm almost halfway done (yay!!!) These first three photos are outtakes from my shoot this week that I still liked.
I'm also having trouble deciding on what the subtitles should look like. I know Kashif said that if color was necessary we could use 1 or 2. I think the yellow would be necessary (if I decided to go that route) because that's how subtitles actually do appear. The other route is the white text with a faded, black box--which is another version of subtitles that I've also seen. This version is beneficial because sometimes the photo gets a bit busy and it's a bit difficult to read the text on its own.
I've provided some edits below of both the yellow and black + white subtitles. If you could vote on which you like better in addition to your comments, I would very much appreciate it. So far the vote is 2 to 1 with black and white subtitles winning. (Marina Dietrich and I voted black and white, John voted yellow).
It looks like there's a tiny little hand on the left hehe.
I vote yellow text! Your pictures really convey the narrative well. I would consider composing your images a bit more. The one with the suitcases works really well and more shots like that would add interest. Also, the contrast in the seventh picture works really well!
ReplyDeleteI vote yellow text as well ! i enjoy how i'm reading this as a narrative and i think that it is its strength. I enjoy the contrast as well.
ReplyDeleteAn, I have many question about this work that your photos don't answer but I will speak with you more in depth on Friday .
ReplyDeleteI think the way your story is progressing so far is interesting, the image with the three suitcases is successful as it represents not only the movement from one place to another, can be seen as a family portrait (dad daughter mom). For text, both remind me of movie stills, i Like the yellow because it has more of a foreign, "I just pirated this movie" feel, but the black and white is more legible. If you decide to use yellow, I would either try to make the text larger or thicker.
ReplyDelete"i just pirated this movie"
DeleteIt was a very creative choice to use symbols to help communicate certain imagery, such as the dye in water to represent the storm. I think the most successful shots are the ones like the close up of the sweat on the neck and the empty seats of the auditorium. These don't directly portray your family's immigration, however they're interesting details that I, as the viewer, won't automatically think of when it comes to the narrative. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteGreat use of contrast in your photos this week! I think your use of text is very strong and your theme is very well conveyed.
ReplyDeleteYellow text! I think you have a great story, but you can work more creatively to portray it. How did you feel being moved like that? show us! not just the literal move, but every emotion involved can be portrayed though the composition of your pics
ReplyDeleteyes yes yes! I get all the feels from this. the subtitles are such a nice touch and really complete the feeling you are trying to portray. I also appreciate that not every photo is the same subject or people its very diverse and interesting
ReplyDeleteThe photos with people in them carry the strongest sense of narrative and are framed very well. Even more so successful is dark feeling that is strengthened by the lack of human faces in any of the photos.
ReplyDeleteI vote for black and white subtitles just because it keeps within the scope of the class.
i vote for yellow! i think it is more cognizant of the dreamy film still aesthetic you're going for. as marina said your use of symbols to convey complex scenarios was definitely a great choice although some (and most) seem to be stronger than others; I would possibly retake your sixth photo which i feel couldve benefited from more elevation in order to cut out some of the trees and upper clouds so that the main focus would be the rolling storm cloud with vague scale-like color values. other than that i really this week's photos especially your fourth (soft but composed asymmetry) and last photo. your use of line, symmetry in your last photo complements the powerful and anxiety inducing source of light and carries distinct emotional impact in my opinion. excited to see how it all turns out !
ReplyDeleteStill voting on yellow. I think that once they're printed, the yellow will be more legible than it appears on the computer. The white text, to me, reads as cold and impersonal while the yellow has character and feels familiar. I really love these though and I think the relationship between your text and images are very cohesive.
