Jenna Agres Week 12

  1. I appreciate these abstract images this week Jenna. I like the experimentation that is happening. A few tips: even in abstraction you can benefit from using compositional elements like symmetry and rule of thirds or isolating the subject. The strongest images for me are the 3rd and 4th, but the image would have benefitted from framing so that the top of the container was not showing, not only would it have isolated the subject, but it would have further abstracted it. I think playing with other materials in the water would have helped too; what would glitter in the water have done? or milk? or ink? Do keep experimenting, how about introducing a familiar object into the container? also, how can this lead into a Floridian story? just things to think about.
    Good job.

  2. I really enjoyed your concept in these photos this week. It is very interesting to see and capture oil in water and how you depicted them in your photos. Particularly, I very much enjoyed the 3rd picture. Good Job.

  3. These are very intriguing. I feel like i'm underwater looking at the last photo. You conveyed the movement of the liquid really well in these photos. the 4th and 5th photos were my favorite.

  4. These photos are really exciting! I enjoy the progression from soft to hard tones in this photo series. The first photos are gentle with very little dark values, a contrast to the last photos which are overwhelmed by texture. I kind of want to see a human form in the water? Idk why. Or maybe something geometric to contrast with the organic forms. Great job!

  6. WOWOWOWOWOW. I have to say I really love the experimentation in abstraction the 2nd, 3rd, and 5th photos (really all of them) are most striking in their sense of movement and position in your composition. Great work

  7. I'm usually not a fan of abstraction but I really enjoyed your photos this week. The forms were soothing and even a bit hypnotic to look at. It was a unique idea to experiment with certain substances and their interactions with water. I hope you experiment with other materials!! My only critique is I'm having a bit of trouble identifying the compositional elements within your photo. B

  8. the abstraction of the shapes of oil work really well! The fifth one works really well because of the different layers of the shapes. I think that if you do the Florida story on pools, you could definitely use similar compositions.

  9. hot diggity, these are beautifully composed. There's really interesting things happening in the 6th photo where it feels like were looking at cells under a microscope. I sort of wish I wouldn't have seen the glass in the other photos as it interrupted the fantasy I was feeling myself getting lost into. Off of what Hannah said, there are differently some components that could be interesting in your pool stories such as adding a curational element by placing things inside of the pools that are representative of that individual pool or to disrupt the pool. Also something interesting to think about when it comes to your pools is whether your focus is going to be on the water itself with suggestions of its location or rather the surroundings/location of the pools.

  10. ah yes the conceptual art skool precursor to swimming pools. i think your second photo is my favorite, i love the stretched out text which adds another conceptual dimension to your photos. you also did a great job capturing the texture of water in your 9th photo. id love to see you explore these physical concepts somehow in your floridan stories regarding swimming pools (if you are still doing that) all in all i think a conjunction of lighting, texture, contrast, and asymmetrical values gave way to this unique documentation of water.

  11. the movement within the water is brilliant and I think it suggest deeper messages other than what is portrayed. Im really drawn to the first photo with the horizontal line creating a sense of 2 different values.

  12. I really enjoyed the abstract forms you managed to make with the water, you 8th and 9th photos where the strongest to me since they look like befor and afters of each other and the contrast in the ripples of the water give it a sense of movement you did great!

  13. The experimentation in these photos was very strong. The focus on liquid forms is cohesive throughout the photo set and is well executed opportunity for exploring untraditional textures, particularly in the last two photos. Perhaps using partially frozen liquids could add further depth to the variety of subjects in this set.
