week 12 - marci p

  1. Your photos each have a great sense of black and white tones, but the contrast could be a little stronger in all of your photos. I liked the ohotos with the model in front of the walls, especially img 8. I kinda wish the foot wasn't cut off, but the model's pose works really well compositionally with the diagonals of the wall.

  2. Your portraits of the musician place great emphasis on him and I can tell you experimented with angles -- the photo of him shot from slightly below is the strongest in my opinion. However, your other portraits are interesting because they become less about the subject and more about how that subject interacts with their backgrounds/surroundings. I would push that even further!

  3. The contrast works really well in the first picture! The texture in the third one works well, but I wish the framing was tighter, so the bottom left corner wasn't distracting. I agree with Jenna, I think that the contrast should be increased, especially in the last two. Also, the last two pictures would have been stronger if you had positioned the model to interact with the lines of the wall.

  4. Marcella, can you post the contact sheets for these images please, I need to see the files. I enjoyed your images of the performers. The relationship between them and the woman in the last two images isn't clear. I am guessing this is a narrative about a particular event? I think you could have used more formal elements to really make the images sing. I think there is adequate cohesion between some of the shots but for some reason the images seem overwhelmingly grey. The strongest image for me is the 6, the character of the image is great and the fuzziness of the shot makes the image look vintage.
    Good job

  5. Great use of pattern in all of your photos. I really enjoyed looking at the black and white contrast of your photos. The portraits are very strong.

  6. Your first photo is really pleasing and the contrast is really strong without being too overpowering. Your third photo is well framed but the background seems a little washed out, unless that's what you were going for, try and work on the contrast.

  7. your 1st 2nd and 4th photo are my favorite. you really.. ic-olated those textures (do u get it,,, because icing....) in your first photo and i usually hate pictures of food in general. your second photo is also successful because there are (faint) leading lines (the microphone, plants in the background) that lead you to your funky subject and their gaze. all your photos have a soft feel to them and i think that might be due to the lack of Deep contrast in your photos which makes for a sort of vintage look. by no means is that a bad thing though if thats what your going for, just something to keep in mind since i barely know what the heck im editing my photos sometimes. ur 4th photo is also sorta ~~trippy~~ some advice tho that i also just realized i think your portraits of the person with the afro are more successful than your final portraits because there is more visual information to comprehend in the background of your final portraits as compared to the others, it seems more noteworthy to take a picture of the wynwood walls rather than the actual model. be weary that when you do take portraits you want to have at least some faint elements of isolation so the viewer is more interested in your subject rather than the background. unless that is also what you are going for, then great , good job ur photos seemed like a lot of fun!

  8. The model's smile in the 7th photo kind of mimics the smiles of the creatures painted on the mural behind her. So in a way, it's like the energy of the mural in the background was transferred to her. I also appreciated your images of the performers.

  9. so hipster hehe I think that guy is rocking it and the vibe really comes through w the quality of light and that vintage feel. I think the cupcake thing is so strong with contrast because of the black and white. I think getting a close up of that would've been really cool for pattern

  10. You definitely could have used some stronger contrast in these images, especially the photos with the girl in front of the striped walls. The darker stripes need to be a lot darker and the whites whiter. While I'm assuming it may have been an aesthetic choice to go with a lesser contrast similar to the more vintage aesthetic with your other photos, it's less successful in those. That said, I love your 6th photo. Extremely beautiful and so perfectly captured. I'd say focus moreso on editing what makes each individual photo needs to be most effective rather than using the same editing style on every photo.

  12. marci, the 1st and the 4th were both my favorite. I really liked the contrast between the burnt and white meringue, and I also thought the out-of-focus rolling stones tongue was fun and well done. I would've loved to see a close up of the man and the snake, because the photo was so busy and I think it could've made for something awesome.

  13. The first photo is very impressive in the flow and curved forms that you captured in the cupcake. Similarly, the later photos with the figure against the striped, geometric background were successful in that the complication of the figure visually contrasted with the simplicity of the background. One of the other photos, though, in which the figure is against the complicated and tonally similar graffiti background, caused a visual dissonance in which it was hard to make out the figure. Great photos.
