Ian Costello | Week 13

I took this week to begin exploring some of the themes of my Florida Story (e.g. millennials, escapism, urban). In addition to this, I took some photos of a girl that always makes me think "wow" when I look at her.

That's my girlfriend fyi not just a girl im creepin on lol.

  1. The concept of escapism is really interesting and is really noticeable in Gainesville lol. Quality of light and contrast are evident in most of your pictures, but I would continue to push the contrast in your future photos.
The blur motion in the third picture works well. The ninth shot works really well because of the quality of light from the background.

  2. Ian, technically your images are good. However I don't get a strong sense of escapism here. Also, the subjects that you are showing aren't necessarily millennials, after 1995 are considered generation Z. I'm making this assumption based on your own age and the places that you've chosen to shoot (Midtown). If I'm wrong be sure to correct me, but I wish I got a stronger sense of the passion, intense emotion of tension associated with escapism. The portraits of the Wow girl are your strongest, maybe your feelings towards her affected how you captured her, which is comes across as in a powerful way.

  3. first i love how you said your girl is wow, major pts... so I think that your images have great formal elements, your technique is good. However, to make your images stronger, I urge you to push the theme of escapism further.

  4. The wow girl shots are wonderful. The perspective is compelling and so is the light fixture and the way you've chosen to capture the both of them together. The flare of light in your 10th shot was well placed.

  5. Your 9th and 10th photos work very well together as a diptych, maybe put them together in photoshop? I enjoy the contrast between the busy, high contrast midtown photos and the relaxed photos of your girlfriend. The light is very beautiful and she is framed well within the composition.

  6. Quality of light and contrast are definitely your strongest elements within these photos. Midtown photos are really cool and I think if you wanted to continue with this idea you can push them even more and it would definitely register as wow.

  7. Your 7th photo has a strong sense of contrast which is successful in capturing your subjects. The way you play with light in your photos also lends to interesting compositions and I would like to see you develope this more when dealing with "escapism."

  8. The 8th photo was the strongest in my opinion. The quality of light, use of pattern and interesting angle of the model all came together nicely. That being said, I think you can do better than photos from outside chipotle or rowdys when exploring this theme.

  9. Your images of your gf are the most well taken I think. They evoke a sense of escapism/being trapped with the background in the 8th and 9th images resembling a sort of entrapment. The rest of your images feel disjointed and don't communicate your theme of escapism. I do appreciate your variances of subjects and the experimentation in communicating the theme with multiple subjects. Keep experimenting!

  10. love all shots with a bit of motion in them like your 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th, and this was a good attempt at millennial culture and for the most part accomplished although i feel certain photos can be pushed like your 1st, 10th and 11th that could benefit from a more intimate angle. your 11th image, i think, has a good concept behind it but i feel that the subject should take up a bit more space.
