Marina Dietrich - Week 13

My project will examine and attempt to document Floridian gun culture as well as the overall attraction towards legal killing machines.

  1. Your pictures are super cohesive, and I can definitely see your style in them. The framing in the pictures works really well, but the ninth picture doesn't really match the framing style of the rest. Contrast in the third and fourth pictures is really evident and adds interest to the shots!

  2. Interesting subject and I can really grasp what you are going for in these pictures. I think maybe a diff angle could diversify the pictures and make pop more, but the framing is nice, and the contrast is evident.

  3. Marina, good addition to your theme. I think it is important for you to include the human element into your photographs. what does the gun user look like, what does the victim look like? guns don't shoot themselves, what else other than the gun itself shows the attraction to violence in American culture? some things to think about.

  4. I like that even though you weren't shooting your usual subject (architecture), your style still came through in these photos. The images are cohesive and do display aspects of gun culture.

  5. This is a really interesting topic especially with the current political storm brewing. I think your first photo is very successful. The tank is framed beautifully and the trees almost represent a certain electricity or gun shower through the frame. The 7th photo also does a great job in terms of contrast.

  6. This theme is very strong and controversial which I think adds power to your photos right off the bat. you have dark weapons and can easily contrast with a pure white background.

  7. This topic is so relavent and i think it was a really interesting choice. The 7th photo could've been stronger and more effective in the portrayal of pattern if you would have cropped the floor and only gotten the repetition of guns. I think the interplay between the man made tanks and Floridian nature is super juxtapositional and powerful and relays your theme well

  8. The framing of these compositions has a wide spread of effectiveness. The tenth and eighth photos, for instance, are well executed, the way the tank tread contrasts with the highlight in the background, and the line formed by the glass in the eighth divides the photo in half.
The seventh photo, though, could benefit a lot more if the floor was not included in the frame. With this, the photo could better use elements of repetition and really focus on the weaponry.

  9. These are really powerful images. In order to make them even more powerful, I think some action needs to be introduced as right now they are only objects. You could contextualize these photos by just positioning action photos between them or retaking them with an action taking place. Otherwise, these are really well taken as per usual and does a good job at capturing gun culture.

  10. your 8th photo is astounding i yelled again, it makes me wish you had more photos that sort of followed that pattern that you always seem to find in things throughout this semester. although there isnt anything wrong with the compositions that youve taken, they are very documentary like/ matter of fact, id like to see you get closer and insist your own perceptions because the mental distance between the photographer and subject is apparent to me. however i do understand that the subject matter you are working with is guns and armed violence so it also is consistent with your theme to maintain a distance, it depends on the route you want to take on this. other than that your photos this week are very consistent and solid, i would just like to see how you could push this.
