ATTENDANCE
Participation in class is necessary to achieve the course objectives. Students are expected to arrive on time and be prepared to participate in all activities. Please mute cell phones prior to class.
Attendance is taken at the beginning of class. Students are considered tardy if they arrive after roll is taken. Students are permitted two absences without penalty; additional absences will reduce the final grade by one letter grade per occurrence. Three “tardies” will equal one absence.

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE (*schedule is subject to change at discretion of instructor)


Week 1- January 12th

-Review syllabus and studio rules.
-Health and Safety Overview
-Explain class blog.
-Basic camera functions and shooting: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus, shooting modes (M, Ap, Sp, Auto) JPEG vs. RAW, bracketing.

Assignment: Shoot 200 images of anything and familiarize yourself with the Class Blog. 
-Preparing contact sheets, processing images to post on blog.
-Basic Photoshop techniques: RAW Processing, B&W conversion methods, Crossovers from Adobe Bridge, Color Space, Color Mode, Soft Proofing
Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images of anything, post contact sheets of this week’s and last week’s images on Class Blog as well as your 10 best images.

Week 2- January 19th

-Basic Photoshop techniques: Non-Destructive Workflow, Adjustment Layers, Masking, Spotting, and Rendering Intent
-Camera Operation: Depth of Field, Focus, Emphasis on lens difference

Assignment:
-Utilizing the range of depth of field possibilities, experiment and shoot 200 images of anything.
-Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog. Please include at least one example of shallow, mid, and deep depth of field.
-Make 4 comments on your peers work on the Class Blog.


Week 3- January 26th

-PRINTING DEMO:
-Camera Operation: Motion: Stop Motion, Blurred Motion, Panning -Understanding the aperture/shutter relationship

Assignment:
-Utilizing motion techniques discussed during class, experiment and shoot 200 images of anything.
-Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog. Please include at least one example of stop motion, blurred motion and panning
-Make 4 comments on your peers work in the Class Blog.
-Prepare 8-10 of your best images to be critiqued on 9/23.


Week 4- February 2nd

-Crit #1 – Projected Presentation
Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images working on project 2. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
-Make 8 comments on your peer’s works on the Class Blog.



Week 5- February 9th

-CLASS DEMO: Compositional Elements
-Discuss basic composition techniques and various photographic ideas (Isolating the subject, horizontal vs vertical, symmetry, subject in center, rule of thirds, power of line [horizon placement, using line to create depth], patterns and textures, quality of light [shoot at 4 different times of the day], shutter speed and aperture control).

Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images working on project 2. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog. Please include images exposed at morning, afternoon, evening and night
- Make 8 comments on your peer’s works on the Class Blog

Week 6- February 16th

-CLASS DEMO: Advanced Editing: Sharpening, Perspective Correction
-Art Criticism (How to give constructive criticism in an art studio setting)

Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on the Class Blog.
- Make 8 comments on your peer’s works on the Class Blog



Week 7- February 24th

-Individual Meetings/Work Day
Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.

Week 8- March 2nd
-Crit #2
Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
- Make 8 comments on your peer’s works on the Class Blog
-Photographer Review: Check out a photography monograph from Architecture and Fine Arts Library. Write a one-page review. **Due in class on March 17th.



Week 9- March 9th
-Spring Break – No Class

Week 10- March 16th

-Photobook Presentation Due – In-Class Presentation
Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
- Make 8 comments on your peer’s works on the Class Blog
-Prepare 8-10 of your best new images to to show during individual meeting on 11/18.



Week 11- March 23rd

Demo – Lighting/ Natural Light/ Studio Portraiture
Assignment:
-Shoot 200 images working on your final project. Post contact sheets and your 10 best images on Class Blog.
-Make 12 comments (3 each for Description, Interpretation, Theorizing, and Judgment) on 3 of your peer’s works on Class Blog.

Week 12- March 30th

-Individual Meetings – Bring 500 word statement outlining the concept of your final portfolio -Printing & Editing Work Day
Assignment:
-Finalize your portfolio of 36 images and formulate a plan/sequence of images for final portfolio. Post these images on the Class Blog. Images must be on Class Blog no later than Wednesday prior to critique. Make 8 comments on your peer’s works on the Class Blog.


Week 13- April 6th

-In-Class Work Day
Assignment:

Work on final portfolio


Week 14- April 13th

Last Class – Final Critique
Assignment:
-
Work on final portfolio


Week 15- April 18th  FINAL PORTFOLIO DUE!!!

Final portfolio of 20 prints DUE 

Late portfolios will receive ZERO.
