Hannah Holmes - Week 12

I wanted to mess around with the idea of using makeup incorrectly

  1. I really like this idea but I think the execution can be more obvious that you are applying makeup with unconventional tools. For example, if it weren't for the "elf" logo I would probably assume whatever is on the toothbrush is toothpaste. Or the lipgloss(?) you applied to the cracker could easily be jam. Maybe it's B&W that did you dirty, but something like img 5 is successful in the idea you conveyed.

  2. Hannah, this is such a fun idea! I really wish the compositions did the idea more justice. Technically your images are fine, good use of depth of field and good exposure but the compositions did very little to excite the eye. The final image is the most successful for me with that very strong asymmetrical shot. It could have benefitted from darkening the mouth for a little more contrast and more light on the cracker but its a good image. I would also not repeat one idea more tan once, having each image a different 'wrong use of makeup' would have made the portfolio much more exciting. Just things to think about, but this was a great idea! Keep them coming. Also, does this have anything to do with a Floridian story?
    Good job

    1. thanks! I wasn't really planning to do anything like this for my project, but I could explore it if you think that it would work well! I'll email you with my current Floridian story

  3. Great idea. It was really nice to see photos with such a crazy idea of using makeup incorrectly. Great theme, and I like how I could see the glimmer of the makeup in the texture. To make your images stronger I think you should use more contrast in some to make them pop a little more.

  4. This concept is really intriguing and it is most evident in photos 1 and 5. As a series, these photos are strong. Also, good use of symmetry (especially in the last photo) and rule of thirds (second photo).

  5. Great concept this week! Your use of depth of field is very strong and you used great quality of light.

  6. Disgussstinngggggggg. Just kidding I really enjoy seeing how these photos turned out instead of just seeing the photoshoot. I'd like to see you work with stronger lighting and greater contrast in your compositions. Your last photo is fantastic and I would like to see a stronger light that would provide greater contrast so that the cracker looks crispy and the lipgloss pops.

  7. I cringed looking through these photos (but in a good way because of the misuse of makeup). Your 5th and 10th images were the strongest. 5 was strong conceptually, but I think the composition could have been played with more (maybe a closeup that shows the texture of the mascara on the nails since it's bound to be streaky?) As for the 10th shot, the shiny quality of the lips and the lipgloss on the cracker really caught my attention. I think using the dodge tool could have really pushed this further.

  8. wow i hope that toothbrush is still usable !!! i love this concept and maybe the reason im not cringing is because i dont actively use makeup but i love when people use things unconventionally out of spite !!!!!!!!! anyways,,, these photos came out great i remember you telling us about ur idea this week but i had no idea what to expect. the focus/ depth of field in all your photos is very soft and has a sort of calming/casual effect in comparison to the animosity that is eating a cracker with makeup on it . i think some photos dont add as much to this concept compared to to others like your 4th photo which seems a little too "regular" but the rest really do speak for themselves. I'd be weary of the framing of some of your photos, for exmaple, your 4th, i think if you raised the camera little bit and shift towards a more birds eye point of view you couldve gotten rid of that dark corner. but overall i love these and i hope you continue to execute provocative concepts like these!

  9. super fun shoot ;~).While I do like that there multiple shots of some of the subjects to show the makeup on [object] and then how [object] is then interacted with however I think that you didn't need 4 photos to show the toothbrush and cracker. I think 2 for each, or even just 1, would have sufficed and delivered just as much, if not more, impact. That might just be me though because I want to see how else you can make us cringe. Great job!!!

  10. I obsessed with this idea and I think the cheese it lip gloss thing is your strongest one because that glossy texture-y feel is there. Gloss it up some more and you're golden. The mascara nail polish is also really striking to me because it creates a scene rather than just a subject that I really enjoy

  11. I think this idea was so creative and bold. The last photo is very symmetrical and aesuthitcally pleasing, even though the mouth is out of focus. I think the 8th has great focus on detail and contrast between the saltine and lipgloss(?)/

  12. The theme itself is very creative here and the ideas used to supplement it were thoughtful. The compositions were successful in highlighting the subjects throughout the photos, though, many of these photos lacked contrasts so maybe in the future the use of some directed lighting and editing could bring this to your photography. Awesome photos!
