Ian Costello | Week 11 "Nature x Man-made"

The focus/theme of these photos is exploring the spaces where nature and civilization collide. These depict their interactions, as well as their shared visual forms.

  1. I enjoyed your thematic photos, and mostly how you successfully portrayed your purpose. I like to see how in our daily lives, nature and construction do collide. In some ways its sad how many trees and plants we cut down in order to construct. I would have tried some more angles to make your photos even stronger.

  2. The way that the geometric forms contrast with the organic forms of the trees, foliage, etc. is the strongest element of your images. It was wise to use contrast in a lot of these images, I would push that even further.

  3. I really like your theme. The 10th shot is my favorite because you juxtaposed the shadow of a tree, rather than the actual tree, with the asphalt which I think was a unique choice. However, I would say that your 4th and 5th photos are your weakest. In all of the others, the interaction between nature and civilization are recognizable. In the 4th and 5th photo I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out where the interaction is. My eye is drawn to the cluster of leaves that are lighter than the rest (which I assume was your intent especially since you even took a closeup of it for your 5th photo) but I can't really decipher how they pertain to the collisions of nature and civilization.

  4. The theme you chose is really interesting, and I think you captured it pretty well. The quality of light used and the suggestion of the tree in the last picture works really well.

  5. The use of shadow and light in the last photo is very intriguing. It's not the actual tree you can see, but the gloomy arduous shadow on the man made concrete.

  6. I think that you could have pushed your theme further and really shove our faces into man's infringement on nature (there's some fun places where fire hydrants are, especially at morningside where you can find them just hiding in plants). Overall, it feels more nature based rather than the relationship between humans and nature. While these are still nice photos, I think some of the subject matter could be improved to force your theme onto the viewer.

  7. Your theme of exploring the spaces where nature and civilization collide is evident within your compositions this week. Your first photo has the perfect sense of the intertwining between man and nature as the leaves of the plant encroach on the brick and lamp.

  8. the photos are full of natural lines and it is so interesting to see so many similar lines that aren't considered geometric. I am a fan of the theme

  9. Great use of the quality of light in your photographs. The use of leading lines throughout the nature is also accomplished very well. Good choice of theme.

  10. I think the last photo works very well at capturing the contrast between the light and the shadows, the way you took the picture also makes the shadows look like they're coming at your direction

  12. i really appreciate the various compositional elements you used in this photo shoot aka quality of light/ shadows, texture, and leading/ dividing lines. your most striking photo is your fourth one, the foreground is lit up and the branches lead upward almost symbolically in comparison to the ominous shadowy background. my only recommendation would have been to push your theme and literally and personally interject yourself in some of these photos as a "civilizing" force. i can see aspects of your theme in the cracks on the ground in photo 10, and the divide between earth and sidewalk in photo 2, but i think if you pushed that manmade part more, this would make for a conceptually sound photoshoot. dont be afraid to be experimental its what were all here for
